22nd Cubs make the front page of the 'Pretoria News' news paper on the 7th February 2000
Well done!
The caption below the photo reads:
"Twelve boys and their parents enthusiastically attacked the pompom weed which is causing problems along Eeufees Road on Saturday 5 February 2000. In their red Sea Scout T-shirts with a pirate's scull on them, faces streaked with sweat, they showed no mercy with their garden shears. The Cubs, aged between 7 and 11, from the Groenkloof and Waterkloof area, read in the Pretoria News that these alien weeds are not welcome. They are regarded as an invasive weed and domestic animals are unable to digest them. Taking on the task of ridding their environment of the invades, the boys reaped the flowers in seed so they could be burnt. The general feeling among the boys was that if nobody did anything, nothing would be done. So they used the opportunity to challenge other Scout groups around the country to learn how to work in their communities, for the community, by fighting the spread of the pompom weeds."
